The Substitute

I had been working as the security guard and part time football coach for the high school for the past three years. I liked working there and being around all the kids, it made me feel young as well even if it has been 15 years since I was in high school.

I had convinced the school board that it would be cheaper to install cameras in strategic locations around the campus instead of hiring more security so one person could cover the entire campus. Over the last summer, I had the contractor come in and put cameras in the hallways, portables, classrooms, lunchroom and library. In order to save money, the cameras were strictly video, but no audio. After I would make my rounds in the morning, I could sit in my small office and monitor a dozen camera monitors from all over the school. The cameras themselves had been put into working, dual purpose smoke detectors, so the students didn't even realize they were being watched.

It was Memorial Day weekend and one of the math teachers who had been pregnant, but not expected to deliver for another month, went into early labor.
