Chapter Seven: Delius by the River

The old motel was right where Kelly had said it would be not far from the crossroads of routes 16 and 13, tucked in under old oaks covered with Spanish moss. Twenty yards from Elizabeth's cabin was an abandoned orange grove gone to weeds, vines and tangle, but with enough straggly trees surviving from that long ago killing freeze, and the neglect of time, to scent the air around the motel with the sweet smell of oranges rotting on the ground.

Directly in front of her cabin, just the other side of the narrow state highway, and less than forty yards away, the wide St. Johns flowed slowly by. In a folding chair by her car Elizabeth sat watching the river as darkness fell. From the CD in her car stereo came the apt and subtly stirring sounds of Delius' Florida Suite.
