The first time I saw him I was shelving books in the library, a job I did for spending money each summer. The library is a fairly contained community, even though the town in which we are located is large, bordering on metropolitan. But not cosmopolitan, by any stretch of the mind. Anyway, as I was saying, the population which frequents the library is fairly constant, and boys who look like him are noticed instantly, even by the older ladies who work there. So, there I was, shelving books. I had just turned into the fiction aisle, looking down into my hands at the books by Clark, Clarendon, and Claddett, doing a quick sort on them, when I literally ran right into him, not seeing him as I did my mental gymnastics. I dropped my books, he dropped his, and he put out a hand to steady us both, grasping my shoulder gently, but firmly, to keep me from staggering backwards.
