The road was wide before her as she barreled along the straightaway. Her hair whipped up through the open moon roof, giving her a start every time she checked the rearview mirror. "Where am I going?" she wondered aloud as she sped forward. Away. Away, was the answer.

They had only been alone for a few minutes. Seconds maybe. But it was like lightning striking, burning its path over their bodies. Hands, tongues, the smell of sex permeating the air with each breath she took. It was so fast she couldn't even remember what had happened. But she knew she felt guilty, and she knew she needed more.

"What an odd thing," she thought, the fresh air calming her, giving her a little more clarity. It was so unlike her to lose control like that.

The daughter of a farmer and a teacher, she knew two things: marriage was forever, and you never called out sick from work. Everything else had been left to chance. About two years after getting married, after giving birth to her first child, coming as close to divorce as was humanly possible, and session after session of therapy, she realized that marriage, the entire concept of it, was unrealistic. Neither she nor her husband were the same today as they had been five years before when they started dating, or when they stood in front of the minister.....and she doubted there would be a day when their lives would intersect the same way they had in the days of their high school ...
