I hadn't forgotten about Mary, by any means. I saw her most every weekday when she and her co-workers would order lunch from my restaurant. I would get a quick wink from her or when I passed her, she would reach out and touch me as I walked by. Nothing was ever said in her workplace and I don't think anyone there knew what had happened the week of her wedding.

About a month after her wedding, Mary started stopping by the restaurant on her way home. After 3 PM, all of my employees were gone and I was there alone, usually in my office, working at the computer ordering in supplies or doing the bookwork. She would call and I would let her in the back door so none of her coworkers would see her arrive and she could park her car out back, in a spot that wasn't seen from the street.

Her first couple of visits was very casual and relaxed. She'd hug me when she came in, kiss my cheek and then lie on the couch while I sat at the desk. I tried to just let her dictate the direction of the conversation, I wasn't going to press her on what was happening between ...
