The weight of January was burying Elaine. The drudgery and sludgery of winter was leaving her tired and blue. Cleaning snow and ice off the car, and dealing with sleet and slush tracked in the house seemed never-ending. She had finally got past that cold, but then this past week she had the joy of watching her neighbor's kids for three days worth of school cancellations. Add in a couple nights at her part-time job at the hospital, and when she finally reached the bedroom at night she was exhausted.

Friday afternoon, she had to run their son, Jim, to his dentist appointment. when she got home she was surprised to see a couple extra cars. Melissa's car was there (their married daughter). Also Bill, her husband, was home early from work. She asked if he was feeling well, but he just smiled and said, "I'm fine. Don't bother taking your coat off." Ignoring her questioning looks, he ushered her out to his car.

Bill loved surprises. Evidently he had something on tap, but rather than keep asking questions, she tried to figure it out herself. It was a little early for dinner, but a small hope inside her flamed up with visions of sitting down in a nice warm restaurant. She was mildly surprised when they turned on the highway. When they passed the second exit, she gave up. "OK, where are we going?"
