It had been a very strange day for Brian. Perhaps the most memorable of his 37 years. He'd never been the centre of attention, in fact he was the most inconspicuous person you could ever wish to meet, instantly forgettable, if you actually noticed him at all. Very quiet, painfully shy, almost incapable of any communication, particularly with women, who made him extremely nervous. He'd never had a girlfriend of any type whatsoever, he had no friends, he lived with his strictly religious mother, who totally dominated him. But today he'd very much been in the spotlight. He'd been to the Civic Offices to receive a bravery award, accompanied by his mum, of course, who had done all the talking as he had looked at the floor and shuffled his feet.

Three weeks earlier he'd arrived at work at 4:45 only to notice smoke coming from the nurses dormitory building. He'd rushed in and set off the fire alarm. As the dozens of young nurses in various states of undress had rushed passed him, he'd run up the stairs to the top floor and got to the room where the smoke was coming from.
