The Tree House

When I was eight, my dad built a tree house for me. It seemed to be a mile in the sky, nestled within the branches of an old oak tree. And when I was in my tree house, I could see as far as my imagination would take me.

Shelter Oaks is a small sub-division that was built about twenty years before I was born. My folks lucked out, buying in just before a real estate boom that would have priced them out of this market. All of our newer neighbors were quite a bit better off than we were, and they invested fortunes into their backyards. But my dad built the best tree house, just for me.

When these homes were built, the fashion was large back yards. Most were nearly half an acre and they all had six foot board fences for privacy. My tree house was at the rear of our yard, near the far left corner. Dad built it about fifteen feet high in the tree, rigidly suspended between the multiple trunks on heavy, pressure treated beams. The floor was a rectangle, six by eight feet; the walls four feet tall and the peaked roof was weatherproof.
