At first Tom thought she was going to castrate him. An hour later he was almost wishing she had.

The guard had brought him to this room, had supervised him as he undressed, assured Dr. Pritchard that Tom was freshly showered, then assisted in strapping Tom to the table. There were many restraints, ankles and upper thighs, wrists and biceps, hips, and neck. His legs were spread, and he was totally immobilized. Looking up the centre of attention was a clock on the ceiling: 9:26 a.m.

"This isn't really necessary," said Dr. Pritchard as she closed the door behind the guard, turning the lock on the door-knob, then clasping two dead-bolts, only removable from the inside, Tom noted. "It's prison policy that a male inmate not be left alone with a female, so the only way I could do this was to agree to have the subjects of my experiments restrained."

Tom had volunteered for this, as he always did. He was nearly two years into his sentence, and about eight months away from early parole. He had strived to be the model prisoner, working in the kitchen and shop, taking all the courses offered, avoiding inmate politics. So when a select group of prisoners were asked to meet Dr. Pritchard and hear about her experimentation on male virility he had immediately agreed. ...
