04.30 hrs 11 November 1943: Northern France

John Munro was cold; cold and frightened. Crouched in the nose of the Lancaster he scoured the dark land below him for any clue where they were. They had been part of a raid on Munich, a desperately long mission from Lincolnshire, but they had been hit over the target and with controls damaged, and an unconscious navigator, the survivors of F for Freddy were now well and truly lost.

When they were first hit, the aeroplane had fallen several thousand feet and three of the crew had taken their chances and jumped. Now just Munro the flight engineer, Reg McLister the injured navigator and the co-pilot Paddy Devlin and Captain Peter Rowan remained on board trying to nurse their damaged plane home.

Devlin and Rowan were both close to exhaustion. The elevator and rudder were both badly damaged and both pilot and co-pilot were working desperately hard just to try to keep straight and level and they knew they were failing. The plane was slowly losing altitude and Rowan had been tracking their direction as best as he could in the breaks in the clouds.

"Paddy," he yelled, "If we keep drifting to port I reckon we're going to cross the French coast at Brittany and If we're lucky we might hit Cork!" ...
