Rosa heard it again, a nearly silent sob coming from the darkness of Mike's room. The sound bothered her in strange ways, bringing out a previously unfelt, nearly atavistic mother instinct in her.

She walked over to the door of his bedroom, standing in the shadows with her arms full of forgotten laundry, listening for a repetition of the sound. Yes, there is was again, a soft, almost inaudible whimper that nevertheless managed to convey a deep sense of anguish and loss.

Rosa was torn. She owed a lot to Mr. Nichols. Three years earlier, he had volunteered to sponsor her for a position at the local University, something she would never have dreamed possible as a poor farmer's daughter in El Salvador before she was contacted by the mission group who changed her life. Mike paid for her plane tickets, her visa, and gave her room and board. Ostensibly, she was supposed to work to pay her way through school while living with the Nichols, but Mike and his wife, Anne, had created a loophole by allowing her to perform light housekeeping duties around their home and then "paying" her enough for room, board, and spending money. In reality, they were more than happy to give Rosa anything she needed, and within a week of her arrival they were treating her more like a daughter than a visitor. ...
