I've lived in my neighborhood for over twelve years and a lot of people have come and gone. When my husband and I first moved here, we were about the youngest couple on the block but, over the years, so many have moved away that we seem to be one of the oldest couples because so many younger people have moved in. I guess most of our neighbors got better jobs, or have been more successful so they could afford newer homes, or their family size increased to where they had to have larger homes. Ralph made a decent living but remained just a union worker, never crossed the line into management. "I've had seven supervisors since I've been here. Six of them were fired but I'm still drawing my paycheck." That statement by Ralph pretty much summed up his attitude about ambition.

I remained childless and we never had enough money to see if anything could be done. With little incentive to move, we remained in this relatively low priced area of two bedroom frame homes, though many of them had brick trim.

Our house was on the corner so we had only one immediate neighbor and that house had been vacant for a couple of months. I noticed the moving van out front and found out some people were moving in. I made up a few things to eat and went over there to meet them after the movers left. A young man answered the door and invited me inside.
