"The State has no objection to early parole," the Assistant District Attorney told the three members of the parole board. "We have also checked with the Washington police; they have no outstanding issues."

Part of Tom's plea bargain was that he serve his time at home in Boston, even though the robbery took place in Washington. "Home" though was a bit of a misnomer; he being a forces brat, born in Hawaii, raised in Germany. It was only after he fought in the First Gulf War that he settled in Boston with his friend Mark.

The woman heading the panel looked at her file, and then looked over her glasses at him. "You seem to have been a model prisoner, Mr. Jefferson. Participating in all programs, being very helpful. But I note you didn't take advantage of opportunities to upgrade your education."

Before Tom could respond, the man beside him, Dan Teague, his future parole officer, spoke up. "Mr. Jefferson has a degree in Computer Engineering as well as an MBA. In fact, in prison he taught computer literacy to other inmates."

The panel chair looked back at the file. The man beside her pointed something out. She smiled. "Ah! I remember the case now. ‘Money to Burn' they called you. You made headlines across the country." Tom ...
