Carpool

I was tired of waiting. Sheila was late again, for the second time this week. At this rate, we were sure to be late in picking up Steve and then would hit more traffic and then be late, again, for work. I tapped the horn lightly. I didn't want to wake up the neighborhood, but I also wanted her to know that I was waiting, and quickly running out of patience. Why did I ever agree to this carpool anyway?

As I started to get out of the car to knock on her door, it quickly opened, and out she ran, or better, stumbled towards me. Her shoes were in one hand, her briefcase falling off one shoulder, shirttails out, her purse swinging wildly as she ran, her other hand carrying two travel mugs. Welcome to Sheila in the morning. Before I could speak, she was apologizing.

"I had to get your coffee!" she laughed, thrusting one of the travel mugs in my hand. Her smile always stopped me cold.

"I would rather get to work on time." I answered. "But thank you."

As I drove, Sheila finished getting dressed. It always amazed me that she could transform herself so quickly in the mornings. One minute, she was all in pieces, buttons undone, hair yet to be combed, no make-up and the next minute it seemed as though she had always been ...
