We were holidaying in Australia from America. The Melbourne Cup was on. My friend, Melissa, was keen to go.

'I didn't come all the way down here to go and watch a horse race?' I said.

'We can do that at home.'

'This isn't just a horse race. It's the biggest event of the year. People from all over the world come down. It's the place to be seen.'

We found an opportunity shop in Ascot Vale. We dug up some outrages clothes, complementing the outfit with ridiculous looking hats. We looked hilarious and I decided maybe it would be fun after all.

The racetrack was crowded with glamorous looking women and handsome men. We met a group of backpackers, who were staying at the same hostel we were. They were dressed in clothing much worse than ours. We decided to hook up with them.

The whole atmosphere was electric. One of the guys from Germany, Carl, offered to show me around. He was cute so I went along.
