I'd recently had somewhat of a tiff with Mike - and it had been nagging me for days. I make it a point to avoid people who make me feel bad about myself, and he'd accomplished that a week and a half ago. Since then, I'd avoided seeing him, and kept things short and sweet when I did. Two things still bothered me about it: one, that he hadn't apologized, and two, that he apparently didn't even notice my silent treatment (or it didn't affect him, I don't know which would be worse).

So I was unpleasantly surprised when I saw him behind the counter this early in the afternoon...Damn! He usually doesn't work until 3:00! Could I wait that long for coffee?? "Stop acting like your mother and go get the fucking coffee!" I silently commanded myself - grudges aside, I was in need of a serious caffeine pick-me-up.

Walking up to the counter, I expected to either be ignored, treated like any other customer (which I prefer to think I am not!), or worse, subjected to whatever sarcastic comment he had waiting in the wings. Instead, as I joined the line, I got, "Hey, baby!" in that loud, ...
