Lifeguard

This was the third year I was to be the pool manager at a private swim club. Not exactly what I thought I'd be doing with my degree in political science, but there were perks working around a lot of girls and women prancing around in their skimpy bathing suits. The owners, Bill & Celia Smyth were very nice to work for and gave me a lot of latitude to do the job.

Each summer, many of the kids from the high school swim team would apply for positions as lifeguards. Usually, the ratio was about 3 girls applying to each guy, which was okay by me. One girl who had worked for me the past two years was an awkward little gal, Cindy, with red hair, freckles and a body like a board. She wasn't much to look at, but she was very dependable and I never had any concerns about her. I guess the reason she was always available was that she wasn't nearly as cute and popular as some of the other girls.

Cindy had called me shortly before school was out in June and asked to work again for the summer. She was very excited to have just graduated from high school and needed to earn some money before going off to college in the fall. "Of course you can work the summer!" I told her on the phone. "That's great Jack, I'll be there bright and early on Monday!" she said with unusual exuberance.
