The First Patent's Birth Process - The Agony and The Triumph

(This is Chapter III of a four-part story that is intended to be read in sequence. As a result, if you haven't read Chapters I, and II. as yet, I suggest you do so before reading this chapter so that you may read the entire story in its logical order and better understand its continuity.)

Fortunately, there was a competent patent attorney in town and I made an appointment to see him the next afternoon. I had to cancel my office hours to do it, but I hoped my students wouldn't mind this rare lapse on my part. I showed up for the appointment and told the attorney that I was representing the inventor (whom I described as somewhat shy) and tried to explain just what Stefan had invented and what he wanted the attorney to do for him. The only thing I was sure of, however, was that Stefan's invention involved some kind of a chemical process that could be very valuable to the Chemical industry. The attorney shook his head and said that he would have to meet with Stefan to get a better idea of just what this process was before he could even decide whether or not it was worthwhile pursuing the issue. I told him I understood and got another appointment at which time I would bring Stefan along with me.
