She heard the footsteps on the landing before the key even entered the lock. Her heart beat leaped in her chest. Her fingers trembled on the page of the paper back novel. She lifted her head and concentrated on the familiar noises in the living room. The thump of his shoes landing just inside the door. The reassuring click as the dead bolts slid back into place. She smothered a laugh with the blanket as she heard him greet the dogs.

When no on was around he talked to their dogs like children. Cooing and babbling, running those long capable fingers through their fur. Those same fingers that drove her mad every time the brushed her skin. She followed the sound of feet and paws into the kitchen. Listening as he produced 2 milk bones from the cookie jar on the counter and preceded to talk and laugh. She could almost see their dogs, the older and wiser snuffalumpagus paitently waiting with her huge fluffy tail thumping on the linoleum, the much younger and anxious golden retriever Czar vibrating in anticipation of the treat.

She heard the dogs trot off to demolish their late night snack. Her cat ears could just pick up the shuffle of feet coming down the hallway. She fluffed her hair on the pillow and lowered the blanket a couple inches. Creamy white skin and just the hint of naked breasts peeked out of the forest green comforter. She pursed her lips to make sure their was still a sheer coating of caramel flavored gloss on them.
