He sat in the swing on the long veranda, very slowly moving it back and forth using just his heels. The only definate light was from the end of his cigarette when he dragged long and deep. He smoked quietly, thinking about nothing in particular, only half listening to the muted sounds coming from inside the house. Whispers, giggles, quick bursts of laughter that made him smile, altho he wasn't conscious of doing it.

He turned his head as he flicked the lit butt of his cigarette over the veranda railing, a soft hisssss reached his ears when the hot tip landed in a small rain puddle beside the steps. Another burst of laughter from inside the house caused his lips to turn up at the corners and he cocked his head toward the infectious sounds.

He was just a wanderer, moving from town to town, living the free life, taking odd jobs to feed and clothe himself. The Johnson's hired Andy five weeks previous to renovate and build an addition to their home. The job was almost completed and soon he would be moving on. He lived above the garage in a small apartment, but had free access to the grounds. He had often been invited into the Johnson's home for meals, or to just sit and talk with Mr. Johnson on the veranda at night. And when he informed Andy that the family would be away for the long weekend, he told him to enjoy the premises and to make himself at home in their absence. He had also mentioned that his daughter would be home from college with a couple of friends while they were away, and if he, Andy, would just keep an eye on the place. ...
