It had all started out with her getting assigned to the new building. Maria was a janitor. All she did the entire day was clean the bathrooms on all the floors and the main doors. She also emptied the wastebaskets in the employees' cubes and vacuumed the carpets. She spoke to nobody other than the security guard downstairs and certainly not to the office workers. They were all educated English speaking engineers and other support staff so she really didn't have anything in common to talk to them about. But when she came to the new building, she did find that people here were more friendly and approachable. That's how she had noticed and had been drawn to her lover. He was a young man, probably in his late twenties to early thirties who worked in the second floor. He always arrived to work at eight in the morning, just as she herself pulled in and parked her car in the parking lot. The first day she had been surprised when he had opened the door of the building for her and allowed her to pass through first. He had smiled and she had noticed the warm friendly smile immediately. She felt good and flattered that he had held the door open for her, who was obviously a janitor for she had a uniform to wear.

She saw that smile several times after that. He came down now and then to take smoke breaks and then for lunch. Maria ended up seeing him often in the building each day and every time he smiled a sunny smile or waved to her when he saw her. She began to notice him more very soon and realized he was mostly alone and seemed to check her out whenever he could. Damn her uniform, which was mostly a bore - a pair of pants ...
