This is a long boring story about a guy and a bottle, who finds salvation in an unexpected way.

Way back when I was in my mid twenties, I went through a spell where it seemed every time I drove my car anywhere, I would come upon a traffic accident. I was almost always the first one on the scene. And I was charged with the task of checking on the wounded, calming the hysterical, setting out the flares, and directing traffic. And a couple of times, I helped to lift upturned cars off of dead people.

It was the dead people that finally got to me. The worst was the young mother. She was a front seat passenger in a VW van that got splatted by a red light runner. The van fell over on its right side, and she came out the window just far enough that the van's roof edge landed on her head. It was not pretty. It rearranged her face, among other things, so I chose not to try CPR.

I found out two days later, from the newspaper, that she was near term pregnant, and I might have saved the baby had I chosen to try. Her husband, young daughter, and dog had been in the van with her. Her husband was my age, her daughter the same age as my own, and even the dog looked like mine. You can guess the rest.

The funk lasted well over a month. Nightmares flooded my brain every night, The pain was unbearable, and as I tried to get over all that, I vowed to never again stop at a traffic accident. I was never going to put myself through that again.
