"You must be pretty happy about springing Veronica from the slammer," Malone said as soon as Latimer bellied up to the bar next to him at Dooley's. "Have you seen her?"

"Not since she's been out," Latimer replied, ordering a double bourbon on the rocks. "I figure she's been pretty busy filling up her social calendar now that she's all rehabilitated in the eyes of society."

Malone chuckled. "Mueller filled me in on the whole story," he said. "I tried to take it easy on her."

"I noticed," Latimer replied. "I appreciate that."

"Hell, I figured with the guy already dead and buried, why bring up something that would only hurt the living."

"You're a good friend, Jack Malone," Latimer replied.
