I was driving on a dusty, gravel, pothole filled road. Miles from the nearest town. I hadn't seen another car for at least two hours. I was heading to a new mine to start work as a plant operator.

The temperature was in the high 30's (celsius). I had been taking a lot of notice of the temp gauge, it had been slowly creeping above the "normal" range. When I had last stopped for fuel. I had filled the radiator, but the oil was down abit. That was a concern as my car never used oil.

"BANG"

With a fright, I glanced at all the gauges and saw the temperature was way up in the red. The car coasted to a stop. Damn. I pulled the lever to release the bonnet and got out for a look. Oil was no longer visible on the dipstick. Steam was pouring out everywhere. And I was out here all alone.

I checked the mobile phone. No signal. You are always taught, that when travelling in the outback "stay with the vehicle" beacuse that will be the first place a search will begin. I had drinking water, I had my clothes. So I figured I would be okay for a while. I dropped the seat down and lay back hoping that if I drifted off to sleep a car would come along and my waiting wouldn't have seemed so long.
