Under The Grecian Sun

"Nicholas," my father said, "It is time for you to become a man."

The hot Grecian sun was bathing us in its rays of light as we stood in the courtyard of my father's more than modest home. He was an aristocrat in our region and was well respected, having fought many a battle for our Spartan King. He had acquired great wealth from the plunders he had made on our enemies.

"Yes, father," I answered knowing that it was the custom for me to be courted so that I could select a mentor who would teach me the ways of men in our land. Whomever I selected I would have to show allegiance and honour with my body and soul.

My father handed me a list of suitors who had shown interest and whom he recommended, but I did not necessarily have to take one of them. The choice was mine but I did want to please my father so I perused them carefully and there were three that I was contented to consider as potential lovers. I would be happy for any one of them to be my beloved and show me the way to manhood and maturity and initiate me in the customs of my people.
