Sibley couldn't believe what Fate had dealt her this time. She stood staring at the heavy manacles locked around her ankles, connected with a thick iron chain that barely allowed her to walk. Matching manacles held her hands behind her back.

"Walk, girl," the large man who took her from her family ordered. Sibley took slow steps forward. They came to a fair, or what looked like one anyway. When they walked under the colorful banner, Sibley saw what it was.

"The Slave Market," Sibley whispered in terror.

"Yes, I see you know where you are, wretch," the slave trader said. "A pretty little thing like you will fetch me a fortune. Fifty gold pieces, at least."

Sibley had never thought of herself as pretty, only plain. She had long black hair that she kept in a tight braid; the girls of her clan were only allowed to wear their hair unbound on their wedding day. Her gray eyes were normal for her clan, as were her dress and soft leather boots.

"Move it! Get on the platform," the trader said. He pushed her forward and she nearly tripped over the short platform, but somehow managed to stay upright. ...
