Ever since winning the weekend retreat prize at work, Kathryn had been looking forward to taking this trip the weekend before Christmas. The little cottage in Vermont was placed a fair distance outside of the town itself and due to the way the town was set up, there weren't any roads that actually led up there. In the summer, the cottage offered up hayrides for guests while in the winter they shifted to sleigh rides. With fresh snow having fallen the week before and the start of a light snowfall now, she felt she was getting the picture book perfect setting of what a classic New England Christmas winter setting would be like.

The ride up had been terribly romantic even though she had come alone but as luck would seem to have it, one of the other guests was coming up at the same time and the two got to share the trip together. The elderly gentleman who minded the horses kept to himself which led to an eerie silence at first as the sleigh had moved through the snow and away from the town, but the lightly lit path let them see their way easily. Even with the small bit of snow falling at the moment, it was already tapering off and you could see numerous stars breaking through the dark blue sky. She engaged him in some light conversation as her cheeks reddened from the cold, learning that his name was Alec and that he was originally coming up here with his fiancee but things hadn't worked out in the end so he decided to get away from it all for a weekend and just decompress.
