Chapter Four...

Cassie slowed her pace as she walked to her third period AP English class; furtively listening to everyone around her abuzz with the news, though nobody could quite believe it. Most days, she tried not to listen to whatever the rumor mill had to say that day, but Annie had confirmed it all last period, during Spanish class. Everywhere she looked, there were small clusters of people walking together, most of them talking about the same thing. If Annie hadn't embellished like she normally did, then today might be a very interesting day after all.

Hitching her satchel higher up on her shoulder, Cassie nodded her thanks to an underclassmen who politely held the door open for her. Once she was inside the building, she unbuttoned the top few buttons of her coat and pulled her scarf loose. She hated these Northeastern winters; they were always so bitterly cold and damp, nothing like her native Texas. Each year, it seemed like it took forever for Spring to take the chill out of her bones, and then the seasons seemed to whip by until it was getting cold again. She spotted Allison and Laura going the other way, and both of them waving to her before rounding the corner and disappearing from view. ...
