The first time I ever really saw moonlight was when I was teaching college, down behind the teachers college sports stadium with Jia SuSu one night in early August in Zibo, Shandong Province of China. I'd seen it before, of course, but I'd never been in a place where the moon was the only illumination there was, where everything you saw was lit only by moonlight. It was eerie. It was just like they said in the Chinese Moon Festival stories: magical. I thought I knew it all. I saw at once that I didn't. There was more to the night than just darkness.
