Claire was easily the worst boss I have ever had.

Sure, I've had my share of crappy managers over the years. But Claire was in a league all her own. I don't think I have ever seen anyone take so much pleasure in the humiliation of others. Like a lioness stalking its prey, Claire had an uncanny knack for selecting and isolating the weakest member of any cubicle dwelling herd. She would subject her victim to a cruel barrage of psychological torture while assigning them the most demeaning jobs. This could go on for months. It wasn't unusual for her victims to just stop coming to work. They would simply give up and quit without giving any notice.

That's why we all tried desperately to exist below Claire's radar. No one wanted to draw attention to themselves - the consequences were simply too horrible to risk. Which is why I hated the position I found myself in. By a quirk of very unfortunate luck, I happened to live next door to Claire. Trust me, if I knew that Claire was a neighbor I never would have rented that basement suite. Once Claire figured where I lived she strong-armed me into car pooling with her. Now I was trapped. If I bolted then she would have known why and destroyed me in retaliation. My only choice was to play nice for a few months and then find another place. Until then I steeled myself and decided to make do.
