Chapter 1 - Meeting Laura

It was a quiet Sunday afternoon, approaching five o'clock, when I heard the smash.

"What was that?!?" I wondered. Something made of glass breaking. A plate, a cup, I don't know, but it raised my consciousness from drowsy to quite awake. I heard some yelling and feet stomping, then a door slamming. Heavy footsteps down the hall, and the stairwell door slamming. Brief quiet, then a car peeling out of the parking lot.

I was now awake enough to realize that the smashing noise had originated from the apartment across the hall. I lay there for a bit, thinking about how I should get up and do something about dinner. I figured I had taken Sunday vegging far enough and now it was time to get my ass off the couch.

Then I realized that I could hear faint sobbing from across the hall. Who would want to hurt Laura?

Not that I knew her all that well. I'd seen her a fairly often in the hall or at the front entrance where the mailboxes were, but we hadn't said much to each other than 'Hello' or just a look and a smile. What ...
