My father died last month at fifty-five a happy man. Two wives, two children, a boy twenty-five and a daughter seven. He left his widow rich and happy too. I spent some time with her this afternoon. I'm not sure I'll ever get married.

My mother died when I was twelve and soon after, I was sent away to boarding school. My father buried himself in work, expressing little interest in women. The summer I turned seventeen, I persuaded him to let me go to the local school, and to live at home. I had been very unhappy away.

There was a succession of housekeepers after my mother's death, none of whom lasted much more than a year, and none were much fun when I was home. One was old and had little patience for me. A second couldn't cook worth a damn. A third was lazy. So it went. The house was a mess. They all tried to be strict with me.

Virginia came the fall after my seventeenth birthday. She was about thirty, fifteen years younger than my father. A friend of his had heard of her through a distant relation. Like me, she was an only child. She had lived at home, and had cared for her ailing parent until her death a few months before. She had had very few jobs outside the home. Her one ‘marketable' skill was as a housekeeper, and we needed one.
