Lil' Swamp Bunny by Chet O!

It has been a few weeks since I decided to go 'native.' The dugout I am standing in poling is my first attempt and it floats just fine -- so far. The Ol' Swamp is not so friendly as you first might expect, but to me, it will be my new home. Where I cut the tree to make my dugout is a good ways from the old cabin I took over from the "Denizen of the Swamp," an old hermit that only wanted quiet. He died a couple of months ago. The shack has all I will ever need.

I was humming my way along. Getting deeper and deeper into the main part of the big water, when I thought I heard a cry or whimpering sound. Now in the swamp there are always many sounds. Most I know, but there have been a few that I have no idea what made them. This one was one of those. The way I was going was right to it, so I tried to keep a close watch for trouble.

After another half mile or so, I saw where the rushes and weeds had been trodden down some and other signs of passing. In the swamp that is quite common and shows where alligators have been. Most of their time is spent in the water, but they sure can move when on land and fast -- real fast! Seldom will they bother a person, unless they are molested. One way that you can find out how ferocious an alligator can be is to disturb a nest that is being watched by a mother alligator!
