It wasn't a good day to begin with, but this was making it steadily worse. A flat tire had me late for my first class at the university with a professor who maintained his "zero tolerance" philosophy when it came to tardiness. It's humiliating beyond belief to try to enter a locked classroom door and hear the snickering of your classmates within, knowing it's you and there's no way you're getting in to take that exam. Frustrated, I had stomped off into the courtyard and had spent the past hour shredding dandelions and grass into tiny pieces, ignoring the fact that it was probably staining my hands green. I didn't care.

After sulking I went to the café for a much-needed cappuccino. My caffeine reverie was intolerably interrupted by my cell phone ringing. A glance at the caller ID told me that my very-recent ex had decided to break his one-week silence at last. I knew something was off as soon as his voice registered.

"Mark, just tell me, what's up?"

"Nothing; why are you always thinking that something's wrong?"

"You are lying to me. Ten months of dating taught me this. Please, just level with me. Are you in trouble? Is it your family?" ...
