She was there again tonight. My fantasy girl, my Caroline. She was wearing my color—red. The blaze was mesmerizing as always, but it was the rapt expression in her eyes that set my blood on a slow simmer. She glanced at me, caught me staring, and I looked away quickly.

The single truck of firefighters, unaware that an off-duty compadre was even present, fell back helplessly; the home was collapsing. I stifled a groan as the sparks of the falling timbers cast dancing reflections across Caroline’s face while the drafts from the flames stirred her long black curls, flushed her pale cheeks. More firefighters and a few squad cars finally arrived and began clearing the area. I retreated reluctantly.

Caroline fell in beside me. “It was over so fast,” she said quietly.

I was surprised she had not made some comment typical of most observers; “Hope they had insurance,” or, “Those poor people,” or even, “I hope that never happens to my house.”

I said, “It either started in several places, or it spread quickly from one source. If the one-source theory were true, I’d estimate it spread so rapidly that it could have only been deliberately set to spread, probably with an accelerant like kerosene or—sorry.” I caught myself awkwardly. “I didn’t mean to start to lecture. How rude of me. I’m sorry, I’m a pyro-forensics specialist.” ...
