He'd been away a long time. Long enough to take him through a Masters degree at university in London, and long enough for life to have changed him from the green eighteen-year old who had moved away from the small Midlands town where he had grown up.

It irked him a little that he hadn't kept up with some of the people he'd been to school with, but at least this summer he would get the opportunity to put some of that right.

He knocked at the door of the small red-brick house where his friend Mike had grown up, and waited as he heard footsteps pounding down the stairs.

The door was wrenched open, and he looked at the person in the doorway with more than a little surprise.

"Alice?"

"Yes," she answered curtly, "who were you expecting it would be?"

"Erm.... Mike probably." He grinned slightly nervously, as his friend's little sister wasn't quite the person she'd been when he left Warwickshire.

"Miiiiiiiiike!" she bawled up the stairs. "Someone for you". ...
