When my co-workers threw a party for my 56th birthday, for me it was more a celebration of the 20th anniversary of my divorce than anything else.

I was flattered that so many people showed, even from neighboring offices in our building. I guess I was well-liked, and that's a good thing !

I'm not really a boring person, but I don't go out very often. And although I'm able to "hold my booze," as they say, I seldom drink. But this time I decided to let myself loosen up a bit more than usual.

I mingled with the crowd, stopping to thank this person and that for coming, and when the night grew old and the partiers began heading home, I was quite inebriated.

I'd been offered a ride home by several co-workers politely refusing but now, when few of us were left, I began wishing that I'd taken someone up on getting a lift home. After all it was only a few miles and I could leave my car in the lot outside and pick it up tomorrow, so it wouldn't have been much of an imposition nor a hassle for me the next morning.

The place was filling up with a new, later-drinking crowd, and I walked around trying to spy a friendly face. Unable to see a single ...
