GARDEN WALK

I'd seen Teri working in her garden for months. Walking through the neighborhood I'd spot her inside the gated yard of her townhouse or out on the strip of lawn next to the street, planting flowers, pulling weeds, watering. She was older than me—I'm 29, and she had to be in her forties—but her body was in great shape. Short curly blonde hair, firm breasts that usually strained the T-shirt she was wearing, long legs that looked as if she worked out religiously.

She lived with a boyfriend named Bill, and her adult daughter, a nurse named Abby. Teri taught school, which gave her lots of time on weekends and during the summer to take care of her plants. Bill didn't seem to help much—he was out of town a lot on different construction projects. And he was more the type to sit and "supervise" when he did join Teri. ...
