KISS

Ross gazed across the crowded room and suddenly realized, with a mixture of anticipation and dread, that he'd finally made up his mind: He was going to kiss Lauryn the first chance he got.

She was 25, with short brown hair, a slender figure, long arms, and tanned, slender legs. She'd been working for the company as a marketing assistant for five months. Ross was 36, not exactly her boss, married. They'd flirted casually in the office. He liked her, but he knew she'd never last at the company. She was too young, too careless, irresponsible. The boss's decision to send her to this trade show, along with Ross and three others, had been a last chance for her, and Ross didn't think it was going to work. Which meant that tonight might be his last chance.

Everything about it was wrong. But Ross knew he was going to do it anyway.

She was talking with a group of women near the cash bar as the cocktail party broke up. Ross said goodnight to the executive he'd been chatting with, set his glass on a tray, and headed toward the hotel elevator. Lauryn broke away as he passed. "See you in a few minutes," she said to the women. "Wait up, Ross, I need to go up my room."
