A Classic Night to Die

As nights go, it was a classic night to die. Any writer worth his pen would have been salivating at the possibilities.

The fog rolling in off the river, made it difficult to see. The sounds of the freighters passing each other on the river echoed off the abandoned buildings of the inner city, and the train whistle wailing in the distance made you lonely enough to bawl like a wet, hungry baby.

The only light visible for miles was the revolving red and blue lights of several city patrol cars. The patrol cops huddled together like sheep on a miserable night were discussing the need to roust out the detectives from their nice warm precinct house.

Finally, Ellen Kellogg said she would call and that her partner and herself would secure the scene so the rest of the troops could get on with their patrols. Police were scarce in Detroit under the new administration and you couldn't afford to leave any area unprotected for long.

An anonymous caller had alerted them almost an hour before that he heard screams just off the riverfront near the old Rubber plant on Jefferson. He had been right, the first car on the scene found a young blonde corpse still warm, wrapped tightly in common ordinary green rubber ...
