Chapter Twenty Seven:

Braddox was sitting in the alcove that served as an office, to the side of the stables. Quieter here than at the barracks, he was also available for scouts to find him easily, and give their news. The past few days this had become even more important. He had agreed to meet the village Elders in the morning, and he knew he should get some sleep before then, but he'd been getting some disturbing news....

What was uppermost in his mind tonight was not Kira and her mount, Kinean, or even his impending visit with the Elders. It was the news that had been brought to him, dire enough to cause him sleepless nights. Reports of villages in the east and south, thriving communities, suddenly visited with plague and ruin. Whole crops wiped out, with no apparent cause. People disappearing.... These villages depended on them for protection; a service long bartered for in exchange for crops and goods simply unavailable to the cliff dwellers. Winter was not long away, and truly their own survival was intertwined with the survival of the lowland villages and hamlets they protected. The most worrying part was that these were not the same as the orc raids that were still progressing (albeit slowly and sloppily) across the countryside...
