The first surprise of the evening occurred when Melinda readily agreed to a game of poker. Although we were both indifferent card players, I at least knew the rudimentary forms and hands of poker, while Melinda was much more at home playing Uno with our daughters. At the time I simply put her enthusiasm down to the vodka cocktails she'd been enjoying all night and her eagerness to appear affable in the home of our friends. It was only later I realised it was part of a detailed and well-executed plan.

The second surprise, or rather shock, occurred when, although rapidly losing her poker chips in a rather spectacular display of ignorance, Mel happily agreed to Caroline's suggestion of a couple of hands of strip poker, "Just to liven things up a bit".
