Jenny had taken another train from New York to St. Louis. It was one she had traveled several times before. The trains east of the Mississippi were not up to the high standards of those to the west, in her opinion. The cars were smaller and she felt cramped in them. The western trains had much larger cars and were roomier.

She planned on spending time in the lounge car watching the spectacular scenery this trip promised. Especially passing through the Rocky Mountains and going through Royal Gorge she knew would be breathtaking. Then she was bound to meet so many interesting people as well.

Ted could hardly sleep the night before. He was constantly studying his brochures, looking at his notes and planning the trip over and over in his head. For weeks it seemed that nothing else had interested him except the trip. He had neglected Kathy to the point where she wondered if he knew she existed. Once she had been as enthused about this trip as Ted, but now she was just dreading it.

Kathy tried to keep up the appearance of anticipation, after all this would be her first train ride. She somehow hoped that Ted, once aboard would return his attention to her. She recalled the night of love-making the night he first told her about the trip. She also remembered the secret he had told her about the train. That was about all that was left to keep her company now as the departure day arrived.
