As is perhaps true of most people, the thought of sex was a major preoccupation in my early years, and especially the thought of having intercourse for the first time.

As I neared graduation, I increasingly asked myself, "Oh, why not? You are old enough to handle sex now. Go ahead and do it - get the ‘first time' thing over and done with." There were six girls on my school swim team, and five of us (*) talked rather openly about sex - how far we let boys go with us; which guys appealed to us sexually, especially those in upper grades (and teachers, too, for that matter); even some confessions about the frequency and techniques of our masturbation. (*) The sixth girl, deeply religious, could not bring herself to say ‘sex.' She thought it was "just awful" the way we talked about it.

One girl announced early that spring that she was "going to do it" as soon as she could this summer, and the lucky guy would be whoever she was dating at the time. I thought to myself that was a rather haphazard way of doing a very important thing, but her expressed thought was that the other person was immaterial - that she simply wanted to experience intercourse.
