Chapter 5 Tris Boy

Ed Reeves was a hard working sodbuster who supplemented his income quite well by doing leather working on the side. Often he supplied leather to the boot shop in town as well as fashioning high quality straps and harnesses for horses and buggies. It was interesting how he got the leather. He'd go around and buy dead carcasses from cattle ranchers for a pittance or cattlemen would bring him leather to cut down the cost of the straps or bridles they might need and he would keep whatever was not immediately needed. Further to all this he had a mule train of six fine quality mules that he used to bring goods into town or plow his fields. He had a unique way of doing this. He set up a plow at the rear of a buggy and he was able to ride in style while the plow was dragged over his prime farmland every spring. His favorite line was "Thou shalt not work hard."

Actually what he really meant to say was that it was better to work smart, not hard. Well, Ed had a teen-age son with the unlikely name of Tristan named after his eccentric grandfather on the maternal side. This old gentlemen had been a purely for profit blockade runner for the South during the recent civil war until his luck ran out and his ship was sunk off Cape Fear. Old man Tristan never learned to swim, a definite disadvantage when braving the unpredictable Atlantic as well as unfriendly Northern naval vessels.
