New Attorney

The interview was just like all the others. A middle-aged partner named Mr. Jennings sat across from me at a desk and asked me all the standard questions. What type of law am I interested in? How many hours am I willing to work? Why am I the best person for the job? Then came the offer. They told me that the firm expects its attorneys to work 60 to 70 hours a week, the starting pay is $145,000 and the firm provides all the standard benefits. The offer was good, but roughly equivalent to all the other firms that have given me an offer.

Then came the bombshell. The hiring partner told me that it was time to meet the secretarial staff that would be working for me. At most of the firms I would be expected to share a secretary but here I would be given one of my own. In addition there was a large staff of "at large" secretaries at my disposal. I couldn't figure out why there would be such a large secretarial staff. Then all of the sudden the partner slid his chair back, looked under his desk and said "could you please get Holly for me."

At this point a very attractive red head stood up from under the desk wiping her mouth and adjusting her tank top. She had clearly been working very hard under there during the entire interview. She quickly left the office without another word.
