The Recovery

Dave had worked at his lonely outpost on the Eyre Highway, hundreds of kilometres from civilisation for years. He ran the automotive wing of the roadhouse, changing tyres, repairing breakdowns, and towing unfortunate travellers to his workshop. His apprentice Fiona, although only 17, proved herself to be competent and trustworthy in his absence. She learned the mechanical trade fast, and even learned a few tricks Dave didn't know, despite being young enough to be his daughter.

Dave's only entertainment was to visit the regional town of Norseman, some 300km west of the roadhouse. He could socialise, get any shopping done, and catch up on any news. He felt a little guilty that Fiona couldn't come with him, but promised to help get her a car when she was ready to. He already had the car picked out, and planned to give it to her for her next birthday, three months from now.

On one shopping expedition, Dave loaded the passenger side of the tow truck with groceries, shop stock and other provisions. He turned onto the Eyre highway, and called Fiona to tell her he was on his way home. She wished him a safe trip, and he noisily engaged first gear. The guttural rumble of the truck's V8 rose to a roar with every gear change. He whistled a merry tune, whilst scanning the road ahead for wayward kangaroos.
