Dave and Fiona had a quiet week. Nobody seemed to be coming or going at all. As a consequence, few people were interested in getting their cars serviced. Even the usual breakdowns for this year slowed to a trickle. This left Dave and Fiona with too much time on their hands. "Have you looked at that V8 I got you?" he asked Fiona. "Yes, " she answered, "I put it on the engine bench in my quarters. It's alive, believe it or not. Needs a rebuild from the ground up, but it's alive. Smoked out the whole place." He laughed. Remember that piece of flexible pipe in the back of the workshop? That's not my idea of a decoration. Stick it over the exhaust next time you run an engine in your room. Do you want me to source rings and bearings first?" "And pistons. I'm gonna have to start again on this one."

While Fiona stripped the V8 in the workshop, the 2-way radio crackled into life. "Tango 547 to Black Stump Roadhouse. Are you there Dave?" "I'm here Adele, what's up?" "We have a 2-car crash 7km west of you. Four fatalities, one survivor. He's pretty shaken up, but otherwise ok. How soon can you get here?" "Ten minutes. Have the fatalities been dealt with?" "Yes, all is secure. Can you take the kid with you?" "I can, but doesn't he have family?" "No. His immediate family were killed in the crash. We're working on finding his other relatives."

Dave took Fiona with him to the crash site. He found what was left of two family sedans strewn across the road. Broken glass, luggage, fragments of bumpers... it was utter devastation. A rear seat passenger ...
