Marion was dead to begin with.

It had been one year since Elizabeth's business partner had unexpectedly dropped dead during a business meeting from a stroke. At least the company they'd been negotiating with had waxed sympathetic and overpaid them for their services as a result. As Elizabeth worked the spreadsheet, she could see nice fat profit numbers appearing at the bottom. Nice fat profit numbers were practically the only pleasure she got these days.

It was cold in the office -- she'd turned down the heat to save on the electric bills. The office was silent -- everyone had gone off on the Christmas vacation Elizabeth had grudgingly granted. Everyone except Brenda, who was hastily backing everything up before leaving.

Brenda came into Elizabeth's office. Even in the light of the computer screen -- Elizabeth liked to keep the lights off to save on electricity -- she could be clearly seen. Brenda was a pretty woman in her early 30's with long curly brown hair and a slender figure nicely displayed by her fashionable dress. She was a marked contrast to Elizabeth, who was in her late 30's, had short black hair pulled back severely and dressed in a suit that gave no hint of any feminine shape. She would have looked almost like a man except for the delicate feminine features of her face -- still pretty despite the perpetual scowl.
