The valley surprised him. One moment he was riding up a gentle slope. The next he was staring down at nature's bounty. He pushed his broad brimmed hat further down to protect himself from the hot Nebraska summer sun. The lone rider slowed his brown mare to a stop, taking in the vast panorama of the windswept plains. He'd never quite gotten used to that. It sure wasn't like old Savannah with its shaded streets and musty mansions. No indeed! Even in all this apparent abundance that confronted his careful scrutiny, there was nary a tree.

"Well stranger what brings you to Stapleton anyway?" The sharp twang of a Northern accent stung his ears as he stood in a small dry goods store. "Just need a little salt and pork is all and maybe some oats for mah horse." His mild Georgia accent lilted and flowed from his chapped lips like a gurgling forest stream.

The thin man behind the counter gave him a scowl. "Figured you were a Reb! Well show me the color of your money mister."
